The Patek Philippe 5172G Salmon dial – Expression of tradition or…

    February 13, 2023 /

Hi everyone, Manual-wind chronographs are a field on their own at Patek and not only for them but among traditional established brands, over many decades. Today, I would like to have a view on the second version of the 5172 family: the Patek Philippe 5172G Chronograph with Salmon dial. It has been released last year and remains their first Salmon chronograph in the regular catalogue. Indeed, aside of maybe quasi-unique pieces made on order for older loyal customers, the previous Salmon dial chronograph was a 5070G-014 limited edition (5 pieces) released for the London exhibition back in 2015. In the contemporary and very attractive blue dial 5172G-01 (2019), I remember…

The Patek Philippe 30-255 caliber – The manual wind beauty is waking-up

    January 15, 2023 /

Hi everyone, In 2021, Patek has released a brand new thin manually-wound movement, the Patek Philippe 30-255 caliber. It was presented for the first time in 2 new Calatrava references, the 6119G and 6119R. Since the 2 last decades, Patek Philippe has released, one after another, new calibers to keep progressing in the search of better accuracy and improving complications’ functionality as well as convenience. Indeed, in line with the origins of 3 or 4 centuries of watchmaking development aiming at miniaturizing clocks and improving working performance, watchmaking isn’t about standing still. It would have been easy to provide the same features forever, not mentionning the Quartz crisis, and we…

The Richard Mille RM055 All Grey – Shades of grey perfection

    July 1, 2022 /

Hello everyone, There is a Richard Mille that, among my all-time favorite models from the brand (and probably all brands considered), provides nearly the same rush of appeal (and envy) each time I see it (even on pictures). It’s indeed the Richard Mille RM055 Bubba Watson “All Grey” limited edition. Strangely, it isn’t the most complicated as it is a time-only reference, but as with all RMs (even the ones I don’t like), the engineering and philosophy behind their conception is so unique and powerful for a curiosity-driven guy (as with someone just interested in discovering any kind of innovations in general) that I’m always excited when I can hold…

The Patek Philippe 5270P Chronograph Perpetual Calendar in Green – From the king dial maker

    May 8, 2022 /

Hi everyone, A little over a month ago, the brand has offered a stunning piece to keep uniting traditional watchmaking and an ongoing evolving world: the Patek Philippe 5270P Chronograph Perpetual Calendar with a ravishing new green dial. In 2018, the brand had launched a rare Platinum version of this legendary complications assembly with a Salmon dial, thus a little more traditional. As usual with the brand, the rarer platinum versions hold a very special place in the catalogue. But in this case today, we surely go even further with this version which stands proudly as a symbol of a new offer. Don’t be misled by the unusual colour; it…

The Patek Philippe 5470P 1/10th of a Second Monopusher Chronograph – Doing it right

    April 6, 2022 /

Hi everyone, Patek Philippe has just unveiled a brand new chronograph: the Patek Philippe 5470P 1/10th of a Second Monopusher Chronograph. (The previous references unveiled during the 2022 Watches & Wonders week can be found here: Watches and Wonders – The Patek Philippe 2022 novelties) It is not a Split-second Chronograph but a Chronograph with a 1/10th of a second additional complication based on a higher beating rate (5Hz i.e. 36 000 vph). This requires a better accuracy from the caliber (otherwise counting 1/10th becomes useless) and a very well managed energy consumption. You will see this isn’t a mere achievement when done the best as it can. It is…

The Patek Philippe 5172G Chronograph – Another delighting alliance of traditional and casual

    March 21, 2021 /

Hello everyone, Knowing what Patek Philippe has offered in the world of traditional manual-wind chronographs from the early years of the Stern era, the launch of a new line is always a major event. The Patek Philippe 5172G Chronograph was presented in 2019 after we’ve been traveling through all the stages of the 5170 family from 2010 until 2018. After the last 5170P, which already had a kind of “cool attitude”, we definitely can say with this new 5172G that the brand keeps on exploring new fields. Next to the more traditional line-ups, they find inspiration partly from the past and partly from our modern times. It’s even quite audacious…

The unusual and gorgeous Patek Philippe 5170P Chronograph

    July 7, 2019 /

Hi everyone, Patek Philippe and manual-wind chronographs is a deep and long story where the brand has established the reference in terms of traditional elaborate pieces, especially since the 1920’s-1930’s for wristwatches. The Patek Philippe 5170P Chronograph was launched in 2017 with a gorgeous dark blue dial. As it is the last evolution of this chronograph generation, I’ll focus on what makes it stand out from the 5170 family, or even the Patek catalogue as a whole. Hence, let’s handle this “unusual classic” model for the brand. To start with, I think it is interesting to notice that a wide array of customers and collectors has very much appreciated its…
